SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Coast Guard in Northern California says it has found debris from an experimental aircraft that plummeted into the Pacific, but it has ended the search for the pilot who was apparently unconscious before it crashed.
The Coast Guard said in a statement late Friday that it searched a 368-square-mile area by boat and plane, but it couldn’t find the pilot.
The Lancair plane went down Thursday about 460 miles west of Point Reyes, California. Nobody else was aboard the aircraft, which had taken off from Southern California.
The pilot had stopped responding to communications as the plane drifted out to sea.
Four different aircraft tried to contact him for about three hours, and he could be seen slumped over the controls.
His name has not been released.
