Suspects shooting at Oakdale officers — a serious crime  demanding a serious response. But, what would be most appropriate?

Preliminary reports indicate that an “officer shot a”‘ call somehow morphed into an “officer down” broadcast, summoning 100 investigators to an incident that would normally require 50.

Officers from Modesto, Turlock, Stainslaus County and Fish and Game were just a few of those that swarmed the scene.

A night when Oakdale officers found themselves in the gun sights of two robbery suspects, folks who live in the Stainslaus County town became targets for tension and fear.

With one of the suspects in custody, the search for the second shut down Oakdale streets and turned what should have been a normal Tuesday night into an evolving nightmare.

It was all too much for one mother, who just wanted to get home to her babies.

An increase in burglaries and robberies was already on  the radar of the neighborhood watch in the area around Wood and H streets. It’s a topic that’s sure to be talked about even more after what happened Tuesday night.
