A Rancho Cordova man was shot and killed Saturday night in the playground at Riverview STEM Academy.

Friends told FOX40 the victim is Marquail Hayes, a young father of three. Friends said Hayes was always smiling, caring and never imagined he would be a murder victim.

A representative of the Sacramento County Sheriffs Department said Hayes was with a friend when they got in an altercation with three men. That escalated into the shooting. All suspects fled on foot.

Area resident Barbara Partain said she was sitting on her porch watching the deer eat the fresh grass at the school, when she saw a few men shouting and screaming.

“The thought of that kid laying there and I could have done something… and he didn’t say anything until the first cop was there… All I heard him say was ‘Over here…’ just barely,” Partain said.

A candlelight vigil is planned for 7 p.m. at the school playground.
