Six Stagg High School football players were suspended and not allowed to play in the first game of the season Friday night.

Stagg High School will be playing Lincoln High School, a team they haven't played in nine years.

Stagg Coach Don Norton told FOX40 over the phone that on Tuesday, the players went to Lincoln High School's  campus.

That's when Norton says someone reportedly saw one of the players holding an air soft gun, a gun that shoots plastic pellets  and confused it for a real gun.

Stagg student Hadiyah Williams is disappointed.

"It kinda hurts. Because it represents us," Williams said.

Norton says the Stagg students were detained a few miles away from Lincoln High School and released after a few minutes.

He says the school suspended the students for being on another school's campus and for having something that resembled a weapon.

As for the game tonight, both schools are expecting large crowds. The game starts at 7:30 on Friday.
