STOCKTON—

A crash took a scary turn that could have ended tragically had it not been for a man from a nearby business jumping into action.

The crash happened just before 1:30 p.m., near Pacific Avenue and W. Bianchi Road, police say. According to a release from the Stockton Police Department, a car stopped in traffic along Pacific Avenue accelerated suddenly and hit four cars.

It then hit a fifth car – a pickup truck – that soon caught fire.

Thanks to the efforts from a man at a nearby car wash, the occupants of the pickup were able to escape before the truck was fully engulfed in flames.

The fire was eventually put out by firefighters, but not before the flames damaged a traffic light.

Police note that the driver of the car that sudden accelerated is being treated at the hospital for a medical issue. That issue may be contributed to the crash, authorities note.

No one else was seriously hurt in the crash.
