Despite the rush to announce who won a particular race, or what proposition passed or failed, the ballot counting process doesn’t become official for nearly four weeks.

“There is a time frame,” explains Sacramento County’s Registrars Voters Jill Lavine.  “I have 28 days to certify the election.”

Only then can a candidate ask for a recount.

“There is no set percentage that will trigger a recount,” noted Lavine.  “ It has to come from the campaign or the candidate.”

And they pay for it.  A recount can cost, on average, about $6,000 per day.
