Two men are in custody after leading officers on a high-speed chase from Elk Grove south to Stockton Tuesday afternoon. A third suspect is on the loose.
Around 3 p.m., three men were seen trying to take water heaters from Home Depot in Elk Grove. They placed two water heater brackets onto a dolly with other items, then left without paying, according to Elk Grove Police.
Store security followed the men to confront them, when one man, identified as David Mendoza, took off running. Another man, Eddie Malagon, took off in a red pickup truck with an unidentified man.
Mendoza was arrested quickly. Meanwhile, an Elk Grove Police officer spotted the pickup truck with a trailer heading toward Highway 99. They tried to stop Malagon, who was driving, but he sped off.
With heavy afternoon traffic, and increasing speeds, officers ended the chase. Officers say the pickup was reaching speeds of 90mph.
A short time later the truck was found near Cosumnes Oaks High School. The pickup had disconnected the trailer near the school.
Again, officers tried to stop them, but the red pickup got back on the highway and headed south.
Helicopter support, Sacramento Police assistance and other agencies were called in to help chase the pickup. Galt Police and CHP picked up the chase, as the truck dropped off the unidentified suspect in Galt before continuing on.
Malagon was finally stopped in Stockton near Hammer Lane.
The water heaters were recovered. The trailer, containing additional stolen property, was found near the high school.
There is no description provided of the third suspect at this time.
