OLD SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) -- Many consider Old Sacramento's annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony the official start of the holiday season.

This year's 62-foot tree came from Burney, California. The process to pick the tree that makes the four-hour trip to Sacramento begins in August.

With a flip of the switch, FOX40's own Richard Sharp and Mae Fesai helped turn on the dazzling display of more than 24,000 lights, 550 icicles and hundreds of other specialty bulbs.

Wednesday night also marked the start of the 11th annual Macy's Theatre of Lights.

FOX40 is a proud sponsor and you can expect to see some of us out there through December helping out in the free, live-action performances to the famous poem "'Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Following Wednesday's show, crowds can enjoy the Theatre of Lights starting Friday. Two performances at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. will be held every night, Thursday through Sunday, before Christmas. The final shows will be held Monday, Dec. 23, with one final performance on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m.
