It’s the very thing that’s supposed guard and protect a family, but a sliding security gate is now the reason a 5-year-old Citrus Heights boy is dead.
“He was like a star. He was different from other kids. He was so bright. It’s a terrible loss,” said Andre Ozeruga.
Ozeruga can’t believe what’s happened his nephew, Jason Kolyadich.
“I hear screaming and I run here and saw him,” said Ozeruga, remembering a horrific scene from Tuesday night.
Jason was pulling on a black gate around 8:30 p.m., closing it behind a visiting cousin, when the unthinkable happened.
“I’ve been a police officer 22 years. In my 22 year career this is the second time I’ve heard about a gate falling on somebody. It’s not a normal occurrence by any means,” said Sergeant David Moranz with the Citrus Heights Police Department.
Ozeruga says Jason’s father had a contractor install the gate five or six years ago.
No hardware seems broken, but relatives suspect a back stopper bent allowing it to come off its track and right on top of Jason.
The average weight of a 5-year-old boy is around 40 pounds.
According to industry experts, the gate that fell on him is between 250 and 400 pounds.
Investigators say there is no criminal element to this case, but they are continuing to examine the gate to determine how it came apart and killed Jason.
