GRANITE BAY -- A boy was found safe Sunday night after the sheriff's office says he went missing while playing with friends outside of his Granite Bay home.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office says 8-year-old Alijah Freeman was on Leona Way when he disappeared.

"He was reported to be playing in the yard with friends. When they came back outside, he was gone," said a public information officer with the sheriff's office.

Placer County crews arrived in the area with a search team to look for Alijah in neighboring woods. Alijah’s loved ones and concerned community members were out on the street waiting and searching for any sign of the 8-year-old boy.

The sheriff's office reports Alijah was missing for around six hours before a lead pointed investigators to a red car. The 8-year-old was found in the backseat of the car with a friend.

Investigators are trying to determine what happened to Alijah and detained the man behind the wheel of the car for questioning. A woman was also in the car.

It's unknown if Alijah knew the adults prior to Sunday's incident.

The boy is with deputies until investigators can determine what happened to him.

"The detectives are going to be doing interviews and finding out do we have a crime or a simple misunderstanding? We don't know at this point," the sheriff's spokesman said.
