SACRAMENTO — Authorities say a man wearing a mask died Wednesday after he pointed a gun and tried to steal money from a business owner at a complex along Cottage Way.
That business owner dialed 911 just after 10 p.m.
“The complainant, reporting person, who was a licensed CCW holder from a neighboring county here locally, pulled his firearm and discharged his firearm at the person who was attempting to rob him,” said Sacramento County Sheriff’s Sgt. Shaun Hampton. “The person that was attempting to rob him was struck numerous times.”
The man died before paramedics arrived. He has not been identified.
Investigators questioned the business owner following the shooting.
“Fortunately, the person carrying his firearm was a licensed CCW holder and was well within, at this point from what we understand, his right to do what he had to do to defend himself,” Hampton said.
Hampton reports the district attorney will review the case but no arrests have been made.
The business where the shooting occurred provides counseling and participants pay $50 per class. There were about 15 people in a class before the shooting.
“Sometimes this parking lot gets pretty packed because of his clientele,” said neighbor Obi Ugorji.
Investigators are determining if there was a connection between the suspect and the business.
A sign on the front door reads that classes have been canceled until further notice.
“Given the nature of time we are in now, we’re going towards the holidays, people are really desperate,” Ugorji said.
