A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer investigators say was “intentionally” hit along Interstate 80 Thursday afternoon is in critical but stable condition, according to his family.

Officer Michael Ericson, a 17-year veteran of the CHP, was flown to UC Davis Medical Center, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit.

The CHP says Ericson pulled over along westbound I-80 near Elkhorn Boulevard to help what appeared to be a disabled pickup truck. The truck then backed over Ericson and ran him over once more before speeding off.

The driver was ultimately captured in Fairfield after a lengthy chase.
