Just as they did after the death of Michael Brown, the Davis Phoenix Coalition is trying to focus on something beyond anger for another lost life.

They’re trying to focus on constructive solutions as they host a roundtable discussion on the death of Sandra Bland at the Stephens Branch Library.

While some see Bland’s death as a clear case of suicide, her family contests that.

Many activists in the “Black Lives Matter” movement also dispute that and believe Bland was only placed in a Texas jail cell last month after a trumped up traffic stop by a white trooper.

The trooper says Bland assaulted him when he pulled her over.

Dash cam video shows that arresting officer pulling out a stun gun and shouting “I will light you up” after she refused to get out of her car.

Phoenix Coalition members say it’s important that the Davis community has a safe outlet to talk about the strong feelings cases such as Bland’s bring up.

“I think for a long time, people thought they didn’t need to talk about race.  But, just because you act like something’s invisible doesn’t make it disappear…You need to talk about it,” said coalition President Gloria Partida.

Davis police and the city’s Human Relations Commission are adding their voices to the forum.

Wednesday’s discussion is happening just four days before the first anniversary of Michael Brown’s death.

He’s the unarmed black teen gunned down in Ferguson, Missouri by Officer Darren Wilson.

Grand jurors decided not to indict Wilson.

The U.S. Department of Justice did however decide to investigate the Ferguson police force and found that officers there routinely violate the constitutional rights of black residents with their discriminatory behavior.
