EL DORADO COUNTY —

El Dorado County Sheriff John D’Agostini confirmed the arrest of 16-year-old Nolen Buchanan in connection to the murders of his father, Adam Buchanan, Adam’s girlfriend Molly McAfee and the couple’s 8-year-old son, Gavin.

Deputies took the teen into custody Thursday morning at his Benicia high school.

The family from Benicia was reported missing following the discovery of burned remains at their El Dorado County cabin last month.

Officials confirmed last week that the remains of three people were recovered from the fire.

Thursday, officials identified the remains as the couple and their young son.

D’Agostini said the three died from gunshot wounds and their bodies were later burned.

Family members were too distraught to release a statement on Thursday.

Deputies had searched the family’s Benicia home earlier on in the investigation while the teen boy was questioned and waited outside the home.

Since then, Nolen Buchanan had continued to attend class while living with his grandmother.

The teen will be tried as an adult, according to the district attorney’s office.
