FAIRFIELD — Around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, authorities in Fairfield received a call about a woman who just gave birth to twins in public.

“The officer starts lifesaving efforts with one of the infants,” said Lt. Jausiah Jacobsen with the Fairfield Police Department.

While those efforts saved one of the newborns, police say the other child had already died.

The mother of the babies wasn’t around when police showed up however, she was found on a nearby sidewalk shortly after.

Joe Frundl co-owns Cenarios Pizza. His restaurant is just feet from where police think the woman, believed to be homeless, gave birth near dumpsters.

Frundl says the woman had been using the bathroom at his pizza place for the past couple of weeks.

Adding it was another business owner in this complex who called 911 after first seeing her asleep earlier in the day, then in clear pain this afternoon.

For hours, police stood guard inside this cornered off section of the parking lot off Pittman Road until the deceased newborn was ushered away.

Those staying at the hotel nearby, say they just wished it all ended differently.

The surviving newborn was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK.

The mother was also taken to the hospital for treatment. Police say it’s too early in the investigation to figure out what charges she may be facing.
