SACRAMENTO — Fire crews responded Saturday to a plane that caught fire at the Sacramento Executive Airport.

The Sacramento Fire Department says a small aircraft caught fire after its landing gear collapsed upon landing on Runway 2.  The single engine plane began to skid and then caught fire.

“Then all the sudden we could see the fire,” said witness David Dominguez, who was golfing nearby at the Bing Maloney Golf Course. “And it was black smoke and we heard all the fire engines.”

The pilot, Greg Dwyer of Carmichael, escaped and was able to walk away uninjured.

The fire department says there were no other problems with the aircraft prior to the landing. Federal investigators will be examining the wreckage to determine what went wrong.
