GEORGETOWN — In the small town of Georgetown, most people knew Jeff Duke as a man with a larger than life personality, high energy and deep love for animals.
“Outgoing, a little on the wild side, fearless,” said friend Scott Vickrey.
“Jeff Duke was a crazy, crazy guy. He was a fun guy, always smiling, upbeat, happy. Out catching critters all the time, that’s what he did,” said friend Billy Wright.
The 57-year-old ran a business called Duke’s Animal Control.
He posted videos about his work on Youtube and appeared on FOX40 multiple times as an animal expert.
“If an animal died, it hurt him. That’s just the kind of person he was, he loved, loved his animals,” said Wright.
Wright says Duke also loved motorcycles.
This weekend while heading home from the motorcycle festival “Street Vibrations,” he was shot and killed on Westbound I-80 near the Nevada state line.
“All I can say is it wasn’t right, whatever happened wasn’t right, he didn’t deserve by any means any of that,” Wright said.
The CHP said Duke was on his motorcycle when a group of bikers fired at him, causing him to crash.
Vickrey says Duke was not a member of a motorcycle club.
“He did wear motorcycle attire with a lime colored green on it, and they said he was not affiliated with a motorcycle club, but he was friends with them,” said Vickrey.
CHP Truckee says Duke was the intended target of the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
