GRANITE BAY — Placer County sheriff’s deputies say a baby was mauled to death by a family dog Friday afternoon in Granite Bay.
Deputies responded to the home shortly after 3 p.m. and rushed the 13-month-old boy to the hospital where he died.
Sheriff’s office spokesman Lieutenant Andrew Scott says the child and dog hadn’t had contact before Friday. A family member was present and tried to stop the attack.
“Right now we have no information that leads us to believe that there was any negligence on the part of anyone in the household,” Scott told reporters.
Detectives say the attack appeared to be unprovoked.
The baby was his parents’ only child.
The dog, said to be a pit bull, was taken away by Animal Control.
