A daring rescue high above Yosemite Falls Trail was caught on camera Friday. Three friends went for a day hike, but an attempted shortcut led to a full response from Yosemite Search and Rescue.

The 3 hikers set off on their trip around 2:30 in the afternoon. They ran out of daylight eventually, and decided to turn around.

On their hike back, the group tried to take a shortcut, and went down into a gulch off trail. This did not work out too well, as the terrain there is rough and it was already dark.

Yosemite Search and Rescue crews say one of the three hikers, Kevin Baik, became trapped overnight and was forced to build a fire to keep warm while stranded on the edge of ledge 320 feet above the ground.

Crews tried to get him the night before, but it got too dark and dangerous. They waited to send a chopper for him Saturday morning.

Baik wasn’t hurt while he was stranded, but rescue crews want to remind hikers to keep to the marked trails, so situations like this don’t happen again.
