A 57-year-old inmate died at San Joaquin County Jail on Wednesday.

The male inmate was arrested on Monday at the request of a victim who accused the inmate of battery and placed him under a citizen’s arrest.

The inmate was housed in general population housing and was in his cell by himself when correctional officers found him unresponsive about 8:45 p.m.

Correctional staff and nurses attempted to revive the inmate before he was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the inmate has not been released. The official cause of death is pending an autopsy and toxicology results.
