It’s been over four years since heartbreaking surveillance video of Sandra Cantu playing was burned into our collective memory.
On Thursday morning, a letter from the woman convicted of her murder on that sunny Tracy afternoon, Melissa Huckaby, was delivered to the FOX40 studios from the California Institute for Women in Corona.
Dated October 6th, the letter written in all capital letters from Huckaby says she’s been moved from the women’s prison in Chowchilla to Corona.
In the walls of CIW, Huckaby is being held in the “PIP” or “Psychiatric Inpatient Program” and has been on suicide watch.
The letter is brief, one page of single spaced sentences, almost eerily childlike, not saying anything of consequence beyond “write me back”.
It’s hard to reconcile someone who still dots her “I’s” with hearts, with the person convicted of raping, strangling and stuffing the body of 8-year-old Cantu into a suitcase.
Perhaps, it’s something Huckaby can reconcile within herself while serving out her life sentence.
