SACRAMENTO -- A man was found shot and killed outside of an Arden area apartment complex about five minutes from Arden Fair Mall.

It happened around 1 a.m. but investigators are still trying to figure out what occurred before the deadly shooting.

To find out what led to a man being killed outside an Empress Street apartment complex investigators may only have to look as far as a dispute that happened there two hours before the shooting.

What took place during that disturbance is unclear but it was enough to bring officers to the scene. Both the shooter and victim were involved.

Sources tell FOX40 when police showed up to the altercation a man, who would later become the shooting victim, had left. That person then reportedly returned to the apartment.

Two hours later, police received a ShotSpotter notification then 911 calls brought them back to the scene. There they found the man dead outside of the apartment building.

The police department reports one person is in custody on unrelated charges. The District Attorney's office is now investigating the shooting to determine if any charges will be filed.

Sgt. Vance Chandler says investigators believe it was an isolated incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the dispatch center at 916-808-5471.
