MANTECA -- Shots fired near a playground Sunday turned a Manteca neighborhood park into a crime scene.

Gunfire rang out at South Side Park on Oregon Street at 1:19 p.m.

“Officers arrived on scene and located two individuals who were victims of gunshot wounds,” said Manteca Police Sgt. Joe Ahuna. “Both were transported to local area hospitals where, unfortunately, one succumbed to his injuries and did pass away at the hospital.”

Ahuna called Sunday's double shooting bold. The park is less than a mile from the police department.

“Being in the middle of the day, in such a public area is obviously an additional concern for us,” Sgt. Ahuna said.

Police responded within minutes, but the shooter or shooters were able to get away.

“We don't currently have anybody under arrest or detained at this point. The detectives are still working the case,” Ahuna told FOX40.

The San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office confirmed the man who died was 19-year-old Brandon Escobar.

Police say the second victim, a 30-year-old man, was shot in the hand.

Investigators told FOX40 it was a targeted attack.

“We want to make sure the public understands that this does not appear to be a random act,” Ahuna said.

Saturday's murder is the second of the year in the city.

“We're fortunate Manteca is a fairly safe community. We don't have the homicide rates of other communities,” Ahuna said. “However, any homicides is one too many. So, we treat all the homicides with top priority. We don't want anything like this to occur in the city at all, so we're diligently working to solve the case.”

This is a developing story.
