MODESTO -- A Modesto karate instructor is accused of molesting a 14-year-old student at his home over for almost a year, according to the Modesto Police Department.

For Evonne Chavez and her family, Carlos Loya was never a friendly, warm neighbor.

"He’s weird. Like, he’s not ... it’s only boys that I see him around,” Chavez said.

She told FOX40 she noticed a change in him last year.

“Ever since his wife left him, you know, he’s been to himself. and he doesn’t really like to talk to anybody," she said,

The Modesto Police Department said Loya is suspected of molesting a 14-year-old boy for almost a year at his southwest Modesto home. FOX40 visited his house on Thursday. A family member at the home did not want to comment. There were two cars parked at the home that advertised his karate studio on Winmoore Way.

The facility has been closed since his arrest, the only indication of trouble is a sign posted on the front door that reads “Family Emergency.”

FOX40 also reached out to Loya while he was in custody but he denied to comment.

On the Modesto Police Department’s Facebook page, at least two people came to his defense. One person claims the teen boy is blackmailing Loya.

As for Chavez and her family, she said she’s relieved that her neighbor is locked up for now.

"I’m glad he’s locked up because we do have a lot of kids out here all the time playing,” she said.
