FORESTHILL, Calif. (KTXL) — A Sacramento Police Department motorcycle officer was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after hitting a deer, police said.

According to the California Highway Patrol, around 9:25 a.m., several on-duty Sacramento motorcycle officers were headed west on Foresthill Road near Michigan Bluff Road during a training ride.

As the officers rode roughly 45 mph down Foresthill Road, the CHP said a deer ran right in front of one of the motorcycles.

The 36-year-old officer tried to swerve to avoid the deer, but CHP officials said he crashed into it and the motorcycle overturned as he was ejected onto the road.

CHP officers and a helicopter responded to the crash scene and the officer was flown to Sutter Roseville, according to the Foresthill Fire District. Officials said the officer sustained moderate injuries and abrasions.

The deer died, the CHP said.
