What was supposed to be a fun day for one little boy turned into a massive standoff with police and his father in Newman.

“I heard he was drinking, he got in a fight with the neighbor she showed a gun to the neighbor to the cops and then they all showed up.” said witness Otis Carmean.

The standoff unfolded shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday.

“We were going to deliver a bench out of the back of my friends truck to some lady who lives on this street and we saw this and we stopped and started watching,” said spectator Anthony Brocota.

Police say a fight between neighbors quickly escalated into a standoff with police in the 1900 block of S Street.

“As they exited their vehicle the rifle was pointed at the officers, the officers were able to take cover and the subject ran inside of the house,” said Sgt. Keith Rakoncza with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

FOX40 caught up with a friend of the suspect’s girlfriend who happened to be home when the fight between neighbors broke out.

“I called her to make sure her and the baby were okay and she said that she was fine and the baby was fine. And I haven’t really heard anything other than that today was her son’s birthday, and they were suppose to go to Chuckie Cheese and have a birthday party and he bought something and they didn’t have the money for it,”said Zoe.

Police added the suspect remains barricaded alone in the home and refuses to come out.

“I am thinking they are probably going to go in and try and get him. From what I am hearing this dude is probably not going to give up.” said Brocato

The suspect, who’s name is not being released, has a past with police. Authorities say he’s currently on probation for possession of drugs and domestic violence.
