A suspect is dead and an officer is on paid administrative leave after a robbery leads to an officer involved shooting at a Modesto gas station early Saturday morning.

A Modesto police officer was wrapping up his shift at 5:40 a.m. when he saw a robbery take place at the Cruisers convenience store on the 4000 block of East Briggsmore Avenue.

The officer engaged the masked, armed suspect and multiple shots rang out. The suspect was killed and the officer walked away uninjured.

Customer Roger Elizarraraz explained what he saw at the scene, "Just cops here and everything was closed."

The scene was cleared after hours of investigation and customers are back to their normal routines, but not everyone feels safe.

"I don't even feel comfortable I think I need to carry my weapon when I'm walking around," said customer Paul Khoshaba who has a concealed carry permit.

Modesto Police detectives are working with the Stanislaus County District Attorney's office on the case.
