ELK GROVE — A passing deputy used a tour bus to break a man’s fall Friday along Highway 99 and Elk Grove Boulevard.

At the end of his shift, Deputy Gibson spotted the man, who had climbed over the bridge’s fence, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. The Elk Grove Police Department reported that the man had been threatening to jump.

After the deputy talked him down, the man tried to climb back over to safety when he lost his grip and was left dangling over the highway.

Gibson spotted the bus stopped in traffic and told the driver to move it underneath the man. He got up to the roof of the bus through a hatch and was able to get the man down safely.

The scene was clear around 30 minutes later and the bus was sent on its way, according to the South Sacramento CHP.

The man was taken to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.

Both sides of the highway were shut down aside from one lane left open to traffic as the CHP and Elk Grove Police investigated.
