A woman was shot in front of an apartment complex on Ethan Way, just behind Arden Fair Mall, according to the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department.

A friend identified the victim of Thursday’s shooting on Ethan Way in Sacramento as a 20-year-old mother named Ariel Napp.

“She doesn’t deserve it. She really doesn’t deserve it. She’s like my best friend. She’s got kids to raise and everything,” Aaron McDonald said.

McDonald said Ariel was probably walking with her boyfriend when she was shot twice in the upper body.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies told FOX40 the shooting happened at around 4:50 Thursday, leaving the 20-year-old victim in life-threatening condition.

Witnesses reported the woman may have been caught in crossfire between other individuals in a nearby parking lot, and that an SUV may have been involved.

“There’s a lot stuff that happens here. I saw somebody get stabbed right over that way,” said a neighbor named David.

This shooting is the second tragedy McDonald experienced in the exact same spot.

He told FOX40 that a few years ago his own father died in a fight right on the sidewalk where Napp was shot.

“My dad dying right over there is the reason they put the gate up,” McDonald said.

McDonald has been staying in contact with Napp’s brother over the phone. He said she went into surgery this evening, and her family was awaiting the results.

“She might be OK, she might not be, but I don’t know yet,” McDonald said.

Sheriff’s detectives questioned potential witnesses on scene for hours, but did not name suspects.

Ethan Way is an area frequently patrolled by law enforcement officers in problem-oriented police forces. The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department said gang detectives who were working in the area came to the scene to help investigate.

“I’m moving next month so there wont be none of this anymore,” a neighbor named Raven said.

“Ariel was planning on getting married to her boyfriend and they were gonna move outta here and everything so it’s crazy,” McDonald said.
