SACRAMENTO — Sacramento police investigated a deadly crash Monday along Howe Avenue.

Around 3:40 p.m., police say the driver of a gray Volvo was heading the wrong way on southbound Howe Avenue before hitting another car head-on in the area of American River Drive.

“I heard a slam that sounded almost like a dumpster door closing,” said Ken Smith.

The Volvo driver’s injuries were fatal. Police say the other driver has been hospitalized with moderate to major injuries.

While Smith said he clearly heard the crash, he also said he was surprised he did not hear any screeching tires before the impact.

“It was odd that I didn’t hear any breaks,” Smith said. “So, could’ve been the speed, could’ve been I just didn’t hear it. I mean, I was a ways away.”

FOX40 asked police when they believe the driver of the Volvo got onto the southbound lanes going the wrong way. The spokesperson said that was part of their ongoing investigation, however, investigators were taking measurements near the center divider around 200 feet south of where the impact occurred.

Howe Avenue between American River and Swarthmore drives was closed off while the Sacramento Police Department was at the scene. Northbound traffic backed up to 21st Avenue while traffic headed south on Howe Avenue backed up to Hurley Way.

“We all know that between the hours of 3 and 6 o’clock in the evening commute here on Howe Avenue, traffic can be quite impacted just on a normal day,” said Sacramento Police Officer Marcus Basquez.
