Popular Demand Reopens Downtown Sac School

Hours before the Sacramento City Unified School District announced its budget for the 2015-16 school year, a celebration was held Thursday at Washington Elementary School two years after it closed down.

Washington was one of seven schools in the district shut down for budget reasons in 2013.

Thursday morning, school district and city officials announced the school is reopening in the fall of 2016.

Population numbers predict the downtown area will grow significantly over the next 20 years, creating the need for more schools.

The Golden 1 Center, the new arena expected to open in October 2016, as part of the equation as more people are expected to live in the area.
