SACRAMENTO — A survivor of the Pulse Nightclub attack shared his story with FOX40 at a Midtown fundraiser for the employees of Pulse.

“It was strange, so many thoughts go through your mind,” Axel Andrews said. “I was like texting loved ones and it was just a weird thing to go through.”

Andrews was bartending at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando Florida on June 12th when a gunman opened fire inside, killing 49 people.

He told FOX40 he initially ran into a dressing room with seven hostages who chose to hide behind a privacy curtain.

“But I didn’t think hiding was a good idea, so I didn’t hide. I stood by the door with a chair in my hand just in case he came in, cause the way the shots were going off, he wasn’t selectively shooting,” Andrews said.

Andrews is also an entertainer who took the stage at Midtown’s Badlands Friday night to raise funds for the employees of Pulse.

The 3-day fundraiser called NorCal Tour of Love will donate all door proceeds directly to the employees of Pulse, many of whom are still out of a job. Saturday, the fundraiser will be at Splash in San Jose, and on Sunday it will be at The Cafe in San Francisco.

“It’s still so raw in people’s hearts and I can’t imagine what the two entertainers we have that are from that area are going through,” Badlands promotions Manager Ron Scharffer said.

Scharffer organized the event, booking Axel Andrews as a headline performer in a drag show, as well as Roxxy Andrews from RuPaul’s Drag Show All Stars.

“We’re having a good time tonight, were gonna raise money for the victims and we’re not gonna let those 49 people die in vain,” Andrews said.

As of late Friday night, Badlands had already raised over $9,000 for Pulse employees.
