Rancho Cordova is jumping on the bandwagon – the tourism bandwagon, that is.

“They will come. This truly is build it and they will come”, said Curt Haven the Director of Economic Development for the city.

He is talking about the new 71,000 square-foot event center being remodeled of the site of the old La-Z-Boy Furniture warehouse. The event center will be primarily geared towards indoor sports like basketball and volleyball but it will host non-sporting events too.

The 16 hotels in Rancho Cordova played a major role in making the event center a reality.

“It’s like watching a baby being born” said Roxanne Schumaker, Sales Manager at the Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott.

She is beyond excited for the project and predicts it will have a big impact on her business.

“What we want to do is bring in new people to Rancho Cordova. People who haven’t been here before” said Haven.

Matt Williams, out of Reno, is the project manager for the new event center. He expects the project to bring in around 40,000 people per year and 3.4 million dollars to Rancho Cordova. The Rancho Cordova Event Center opens on March 23.
