Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Police Chief Sam Somers revealed Monday that they are discussing how to combat a recent spike in crime.
According to a news release from the mayor’s office, Chief Somers will be meeting with other local law enforcement officials and City Council members about specific issues.
Somers and Johnson are also considering expanding the use of ShotSpotter in South Sacramento and increase officer-neighborhood engagement.
The city’s “Officer Next Door Initiative” is said to have added $5 million to the 2016 budget. That money will go toward hiring 15 new officers, adding a body camera pilot program and forming a gang prevention task force and community police commission.
