SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Police Department is searching for the person who shot and killed a man at a park in Del Paso Heights Friday night.
Authorities responded to the shooting at Hagginwood Park on Marysville Boulevard around 9:13 p.m.
“Shots went off people started ducking, running and hiding for cover. All that type of stuff. By the time we look up, unfortunately he was one of the people hit and he passed,” Londell Marshall said.
Marshall described the victim as his close friend and said he was in his 20s.
“He was a good friend of mine for a long time, from high school. We played basketball. A good sport … a good dude,” Marshall said.
Official identification of the victim will come from the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office but police confirm that despite medical efforts to save the man, he died at the scene.
“There is no motive at this time. But what we do know, preliminary investigation, it appears this is an isolated incident. So it appears there is no immediate threat to the community or the surrounding area there,” Officer Marcus Basquez said.
Police said there were multiple witnesses — who they are working to interview now — but they hope more will come forward.
There are surveillance cameras posted all over the park but police say they aren’t sure whether the cameras captured the suspect or the incident.
Police said they have had issues at the park in the past and are looking to increase patrols.
In the meantime, friends can’t help but wonder why this happened.
“Could’ve been anybody. Could’ve been mistaken identity,” Marshall said. “Unfortunately, it’s sad to say, this is just like another day in Del Paso Heights.”
