Schools around Valley Springs, especially Jenny Lind Elementary, saw tightened security Monday morning after 8-year-old Leila Fowler was murdered in her own home.

Now, two hearts and the name Leila are woven with ribbon into the front gate at Jenny Lind Elementary school.

The curriculum Monday was focused on coping, dealing with intense grief and fear after an 8-year-old classmate is brutally murdered in her own home. Investigators say the suspect still out there somewhere.

Counselors were on hand to help students make it through the loss. Parents dropping off their most precious commodity, their children, struggled to comprehend what had happened.

Throughout the morning, entire classrooms came outside to tie ribbons on the fence to memorialize Leila. They also hung posters and messages around the school.

Also around the school, law enforcement, not only here but at schools in the area and at bus stops, as investigators continue to look for Leila’s killer.
