Despite orders to evacuate, some homeowners in the path of the Hunters Fire refused to leave.

Ralph Finch has lived in the area for 20 years. Flames have come within a few hundred feet from his home, but he says he’s staying put.

“Out in this kind of country, you’d better do what Mother Nature says you do,” Finch said.

To defend his rural property, Finch uses a fire hose given to him by firefighters years ago. He says it works fine, despite a few leaks.

By 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, the Hunters Fire had consumed 1,300 acres of Mariposa County – including three structures.
