FOX40 — Students called her Miss Ariyana; she was also a mother of two, but on Thursday night she was taken from those who loved her.

“That joy is not going to be here anymore; it’s devastating to us,” said Christy Vail with Sacramento Country Day School.

Ariyana Jones was inside her South Sacramento home when someone opened fire outside. Bullets riddled her home on Tortola Way. Her husband and two children weren’t hurt, but she was killed in front of her own family.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” said neighbor Christopher Maharaj.

The Sacramento Police Department can’t say if the shooting is a targeted attack. Investigators said it’s not gang related.

Jones leaves behind her immediate family and her family at Sacramento Country Day School where she worked for seven years.

“She was so loved in this community and touched so many lives we just can’t deal with losing her,” Vail said.

Jones started working at the school as an after school counselor then became an assistant pre-K teacher. Her passion for teaching never went unnoticed.

“Loved every child and parent she came in contact with,” said Head of School Lee Thomsen.

The class she teaches was cancelled Friday and counselors were at school to help students and teachers with this unexpected tragedy.

The school created a GoFundMe account to raise money for funeral expenses.
