Under the neon lights of a Stockton gas station, Mayor Anthony Silva sports a white bathrobe in the middle of the night.
“Is he doing anything illegal? No. Is it a little silly? Yes,” political consultant Lee Neves told FOX40.
Neves said the picture may hurt Silva politically as he campaigns for re-election.
“Something like this you get out in front of instead of letting the narrative be taken over by someone else,” he said.
Mayor Silva refused to speak with us on-camera. He did, however, share another photo with us of him wearing a T-shirt and basketball shorts. He said that was what he wore underneath the robe. He stressed he was cold in the middle of the night replacing stolen signs and that’s why he wore a borrowed bath robe.
“And it kind of just adds to people's perception that this is a mayor that marches to the beat of his own drummer,” Neves explained.
Neves said some supporters will shrug it off, even see him as a dedicated candidate. Stockton voters we spoke with had a different reaction.
"Bathrobe? I decline to comment,” Jasmine Leek said as she laughed.
“That's weird. That is so weird. I don't even know what to say,” Monica Bun said.
In the future, Neves advises Silva, to put on at least a sweatshirt and sweatpants.
Mayor Silva said he will never speak to FOX40 again if we aired the photo.
