VACAVILLE —
A Vacaville postman is being hailed a hero after coming to the rescue of an elderly woman.
“Not all the postmen deliver to the door to elderly women,” FOX40 said to postman Corey Shaw.
“Yeah. I guess not,” Shaw humbly conceded with a laugh.
Shaw usually places mail in community postal boxes. But he hand delivers letters to at least two elderly women on his route.
Last Saturday, his selfless act proved to be life saving for a 90-year-old woman. Just after ringing the woman’s doorbell to hand her some coupons …
“I hear her saying, ‘Help. I’ve fallen,'” he said.
After delivering her mail for the past 12 years, Shaw knew something was wrong.
“I knew she was elderly. I just wanted to get some help for her,” he said.
He dialed 911. Then tried unsuccessfully to get through the locked front door.
Although she spoke softly, Shaw was able to understand this very clearly.
“She was talking about two days,” he said.
Two days she laid on the floor, unable to get up and help herself.
Neighbor Kyla Begley heard frantic calls from down the street, just before telling her dad, an off-duty firefighter.
“So I ran up the stairs and got my dad and I said ‘Mickey fell,'” Kyla said.
As they continued to try to get inside, first responders arrived and got inside the home.
“The paramedics said she had a bump,” Shaw said.
“She was laying on the floor of the entry way,” off-duty firefighter Steve Begley said. “Apparently she did drag herself around the house, trying to get someone’s attention.”
“She looked in good spirits. She had a smile on her face,” Shaw added.
The woman is now in the hospital recovering from her fall.
“We’re so thankful for Mr. Shaw and the actions that he took. Without that, the outcome of this story would’ve ended much differently,” Vacaviile police Lt. Mark Donaldson said.
A community grateful for not only a postal worker, but for neighbors who went above and beyond to help one of their own.
“To have such a person that would take the time to help her at the right time,” added neighbor Cindy Begley.
