A 24-year-old man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after his girlfriend died of injuries she allegedly sustained being shot by celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Eve.

The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department says they believe Steven Michael Lucas shot his girlfriend accidentally. He has also been charged with negligent discharge of a firearm.

Neighbors at the Meridian Terrace Apartments on Callie Lane tell FOX40 they heard 4 shots right after midnight.

“It was terrifying. So for the person who received them bullets it was much worse,” said a woman named Caroline.

Caroline said immediately following the shooting, she heard several men arguing in the hallway. She also said she heard someone walking loudly or being dragged behind one of the apartment buildings. A trail of blood and chalk showed the victim’s path in between apartments.

“Everybody here is upset. Everybody’s walking around and looking cause there’s some matter on top of the blood there,” Caroline said.

If you have any information about the shooting, you are urged to contact the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department.

“When bullets come down, they gotta come down on somebody,” Caroline said.
