NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. (KTXL) — Tense moments unraveled at a protest against President Donald Trump during his visit with state leaders Monday as a demonstrator in Sacramento County climbed on top of a California Highway Patrol car.

The officer drove away, knocking the protester to the ground.

“That officer was sitting here parked for about 30 minutes and all of a sudden he turns his car on and gases it as fast as he can,” said activist and director of Empact Leia Schenk. “It was not an accident at all. He planned it out.”

Schenk helped organize the protest and told FOX40 two demonstrators were hurt as the officer drove away.

The one knocked off the car was taken away on a stretcher for medical care at a local hospital. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said the extent of their injuries is unknown.

Schenk also does not yet know the extent of their injuries but said those were not the only demonstrators hurt.

FOX40 followed protesters as they marched in the street, yelling and stopping traffic around McClellan Park.

Video captured cars driving into protesters, clipping them.

“So, we came out here peacefully and look what happens. We have six people ran down by Trumpsters and then we have two more ran down by CHP,” Schenk said.

Schenk said they were protesting President Trump and his visit for a briefing on California’s wildfires.

“We are here because it trickles down from the top. Trump coming out here was a political front,” Schenk said. “He doesn’t care about forestry.”

Schenk said their focus now is shifting to the CHP, calling for answers as to why the collision happened.

FOX40 reached out to the CHP for comment about what happened and CHP officials released the following statement:

The North Sacramento Area CHP is investigating an incident from earlier this afternoon involving a protestor and one of our patrol vehicles.  Two CHP officers were conducting traffic control near the intersection of northbound Watt Ave and Airbase Drive and attempted to leave the area.  As the lead vehicle began to pull away, one of the protestors climbed up the hood of the patrol vehicle.  Fearing for his safety, the officer began to accelerate away and the protestor fell off the vehicle.

Medical aid was provided and the party was transported to Mercy San Juan with minor injuries.
