SOUTH SACRAMENTO–

According to SMUD, thousands were without power near Power Inn and Calvine roads earlier Sunday evening due to heavy winds.

Wind gusts have been picking up throughout the day and they are expected to get worse. Overnight winds are expected to reach 20 mph, and gusts could possibly double that tomorrow.

Over 12,102 people were without power, according to the SMUD outage map.

If your power goes out make sure you have plenty of batteries, flashlights, and a battery powered radio, officials say.

Other tips for when your power goes out are:

-Keep your refrigerator cold by not opening the door.

-Have plenty of canned foods.

-Unplug all electrical devices, but leave one turned on so you know when the power is back.
