Police say that a group of men attacked a 69-year-old man late Sunday afternoon, robbing him of his gold chain.

According to police logs, a suspect riding a bike rode up to the man near San Joaquin Street and Hazelton Avenue around 5 p.m.

The suspect asked for a lighter, but soon grabbed the man’s gold chain necklace. The 69-year-old tried fighting back, hitting the other man with his cane, but two more suspects in the area moved in and attacked the man with large sticks – hitting him in the head.

In spite of the attack, the 69-year-old was able to get away. The suspects also took off.

Police say that the 69-year-old took some cuts to the head, but is otherwise expected to be OK.

The suspect that rode up on the bike is described as a black man standing about 5’10, medium build with short black hair, and was wearing a white t-shirt and dark plaid shorts at the time. His bike was purple and black.
