MODESTO — A Stanislaus County judge has decided to temporarily seal results from a competency hearing that would determine if the man suspected of killing Corporal Ronil Singh is fit to stand trial.
Paulo Mendoza (also known as Gustavo Arriaga) was in court this morning as his attorney Stephen Foley asked for the results to be sealed. Last month, Foley told the judge he believe his client was “too incompetent” to stand trial but now says he longer doubts the competency. He’s hoping to keep the results sealed. But it may be too late.
People gathered outside the courthouse to show support for Corporal Singh’s family who were in the courtroom.
Tina Saavedra believes there should be no question about Mendoza’s competency.
“This person was competent when he murdered Corporal Singh,” Saavedra said. “He was mentally competent when he took off from this area and sought help from other people and family members to get away from law enforcement so it just makes me a little upset.”
Criminal proceedings are suspended until the results of the mental health evaluation are reviewed. Mendoza is due back in court April 8.
