Sacramento Metro Fire responded to two structure fires Sunday morning within 30 minutes of each other. The two fires – one in Citrus Heights, the other in Rancho Cordova – highlight the increase they are seeing in structure fires over the past few months.

Structure fires were up 14% in 2012 and Metro Fire fears that if the current trend continues, they will see another increase in 2013.  In the past month alone, they have responded to over 60 working fires, many of which were fatal.

Metro Fire are encouraging everyone to be proactive in reducing their risk of fire. They suggest never leaving food cooking on the stove unattended, using only licensed electricians, and always disposing of smoking materials properly.

To reduce the risk of fire in the home, they recommend making sure you have working smoke alarms in all rooms and have an established escape route. They warn that if you suspect a fire – get out and stay out.
