MODESTO, Calif. (KTXL) — A Modesto burglary suspect is recovering after being shot by a homeowner early Thursday morning.
Modesto police investigators say Samuel White Jr. broke into an RV on Gordon Avenue, sounding off an alarm and alerting a vigilant homeowner.
Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said after the homeowner found Samuel White Jr. inside his RV, his wife called 911.
In the commotion, the homeowner said White charged at him and a gun had been fired.
“There was an encounter that caused the homeowner to get scared and shoot the subject in the motorhome,” Bear said.
Bear said the homeowner shot White in the leg in an act of self-defense.
The Modesto homeowner did not want to comment.
“I think that the guy’s lucky that my neighbor didn’t use deadly force,” said neighbor Mark Speake.
Families in the neighborhood told FOX40 the action their neighbor took was justified.
“My belief is he did everything that he could within his rights to defend himself and his wife,” said neighbor Joe Cataline.
Bear said as of Thursday night, the homeowner was not facing any charges.
“We’ll complete a thorough investigation to make sure that we look at all aspects of the case and that it’s done fairly,” she told FOX40.
She added White, who had been hospitalized, will face charges for burglary and violating his parole after he is treated. In the past, White was arrested for shoplifting in Ripon and is wanted in Ripon in a larceny case.
