A “large-scale” riot at Folsom Prison has left at least ten inmates injured, one was shot and the others had stab or slash wounds.

The riot started Wednesday morning around 11 in one of the prison’s maximum-security general population yards. Several ambulances from Sacramento were called to California State Prison Sacramento, also known as new Folsom Prison, to help transport the injured to Sacramento-area hospitals.

A spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says the incident was a “large-scale riot involving an unknown number of inmates”. In addition to non-lethal options to stop the riot, officers used a mini 14 rifle, one inmate was shot.

There are no reports at this time of injuries to prison staff.
