WEST MILFORD, New Jersey-

A university student took pictures of a large black bear, moments before the animal chased the student down, and mauled him.

Police released a handful of photos, taken by Darsh Patel. Patel attended Rutgers University.

He was hiking with friends when they met a couple who warned them a bear was in the area.

The student hikers wanted to see the bear, according to a report by state officials, and they kept going.

The hikers spotted the 300-pound black bear about 100 feet away, at that point, they stopped and took photos with their cell phones.

The bear then walked toward the hikers, and began running after them as the students tried to get away.

Patel and the others split up as they tried to get away. The other four reunited, and noticed Patel was missing.

A bear was found near Patel’s body, and was killed by officials. A necropsy appears to confirm the bear is the same one that killed Patel.
