UNIONTOWN, Pennslyvania (WTAE)-

A would-be robber was busted after investigators followed the paper trail, the toilet paper trail.

A man entered a pizza shop in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

“He handed the employee two pieces of toilet paper and on the toilet paper it had written, ‘I have a gun on me, give me three hundred dollars;,” Lt Tom Kolencik with Uniontown Police Department said.  “He said ‘there’s a guy outside and he has a gun on me if I don’t leave this store with 300 dollars, he’s going to shoot me’.”

The clerk saw the note and was suspicious of the man’s story, he hit a secret alarm behind the counter.

The man was still inside when police arrived, and tried to stick to his story, telling officers he was relieved they saved him.

Investigators identified the man as Eric Frey, and checked out his apartment after the would-be robbery. There they found a piece of evidence linking him to the crime.

“He actually wrote on the roll, he didn’t tear it off, and it was actually kind of encrypted on the roll which matched up perfectly,” Lt Kolencik said.

Officers also found drug paraphernalia and marijuana. Frey will face drug charges in addition to the attempted robbery.
